Jan. 2022–May 2022

This thesis was done during the last semester of the graduating BFA Graphic Design C/O 2022 at San José State University. The topic area for thesis projects was open-ended, but required students to challenge themselves in developing a visual solution towards an issue within their interests. Students were required to connect with three advisors to meet throughout the semester for signed approval of the project’s current status prior to presentations (proposal, midterm, and semi-final) before faculty via zoom. Final thesis presentations were done in-person and project deliverables were displayed during the Imagine That Senior Exhibition. Aurize is a customizable journal data visualization app that provides insights and guided writing sessions.

Abstract

Journaling is an intimate process used for mindfulness, self-awareness, and daily tracking in mental and physical health. While there is a variety of methods for journaling, this project explores text-based stream of consciousness journaling using guided prompts translated into a digital tracking experience. The goal of a stream of consciousness journal is to help the author develop conclusions about themselves through the process of freewriting–allowing any thought or feeling to be jotted down without judgement. Because of its freeflowing nature, going back to review journal entries may not be as valuable compared to when it is being written. Reinterpreting this written data through a customized data visualization mobile application experience utilizing text analysis and AI recognition software may help young adults (such as college students) find meaningful connections between overlooked topics that were not originally found. This can be useful in finding trends and patterns over an extensive period of time, which is difficult to pinpoint when manually reviewing written entries. In recent studies, journaling for students has been useful in developing their critical thinking skills, building confidence, and improving gratitude. This project strives to encourage young adults to become more in tune with themselves through the habit of journaling for self-care and relaxation from their busy lives.

Thesis:

Stream of consciousness journals are difficult to manually find trends and patterns due to its free-flowing nature. Elevating the journaling experience by combining the physical with digital technology would help users improve their self-awareness and habits in self-care.

The Insights tab provides all data visualizations. Users can tap through filters as well as modules to reach secondary/tertiary levels that reveal AI analysis summaries of trends or connections between data points.

The Customize tab allows users to edit their moods, themes, topics, and activities based on what is written in their journal entries.

Full app walkthrough of customize tab, insights tab, and guided entry flows. Guided entry is where users can follow alongside suggested prompts during a journaling session. After completing a written journal entry, pages can be scanned through the camera to be analyzed and translated into visualizations using AI.

Throughout my iterations, I continuously sketched to figure out effective ways to present data through a mobile screen. Giorgia Lupi was a source of inspiration during my research for design thinking in data visualization.
