Discovery & Research / Exhibition Design

What’s the Issue?

Food insecurity is one of the most pressing problems college communities face today. The lack of food affordability often leads to lifestyle habits that can harm a student’s physical and mental well-being such as ordering takeout, or cheap, processed meals that are quick to prepare. Over time, it can be more costly than homemade budget-friendly meals which may reduce the worry of finding their next bite.

But Wait, Don’t Colleges Have Food Pantries?

Colleges provide food assistance programs, yet seeking help still carries a stigma. Social misconceptions are the main obstacles in students determining whether or not to participate.

Analysis of collaborative market research conducted with class peers also highlighted other problems among food-insecure students, such as food literacy, busy schedules, and single-use packaging waste.

Brainstorming & Ideation / Exhibition Design

Creating a Joyful Experience

What’s the Focus?

Based on research findings, I brainstormed solutions and identified a focus for the kiosk’s services. I decided on a bulk refill station, drawing inspiration from existing food pantries and refill sites. This approach addresses food affordability, diversity, sustainability, and convenience, while also meeting other essential needs, such as access to hygiene products.

Maximizing Space

My goal was to create a multifunctional hub that accommodates a variety of products. Due to horizontal constraints, I utilized the vertical space to create multiple entry points, making the area more inviting to students. The project needed to comply with ADA guidelines.
